| Retention is always required in orthodontic treatment to maintain the stability of the teeth following orthodontic movement of the teeth into their proper position. The retainers maintain tooth position by the patient wearing the retainers six months full-time after the braces are removed and then just at night. After growth is completed or for one year in an adult, the retainer wear is then usually tapered down to wearing them 2-3 nights per week. Retention is an overall important, integral part of the stabilization of the orthodontic results and the patient needs to be consistent in following instructions of Dr. Brenkert. Retainers usually have a lifetime of 5-10 years if they are not broken or bent but typically need to be replaced during this time frame. Just like shoes, the retainers do wear out and this periodic replacement of the retainers will keep your teeth in alignment and the retainers fitting properly. |
