| ROOT RESORPTION |
|
| Root resorption entails the loss of the tip of the root during tooth movement. Most orthodontic patients will experience minor root resorption during treatment. Severe root resorption is usually due to injuries to the tooth that have taken place during or before the orthodontic treatment or an abnormality within the tooth/root structure. However, minor root resorption does not decrease the longevity of the tooth and with the majority of patients experiencing 1mm - 2mm of root resorption. Advanced root resorption can occur with severe injuries to the teeth or abnormal hormonal problems/genetic problems in the body that result in resorption of the root as the tooth is moved. Sometimes, the resorption is such that the treatment has to be stopped and a compromised result discussed. This is usually rare and confined to the upper and lower front teeth. |
